WATCH CLEANING GUIDE
WATCH CARE FROM THE EXPERTS AT FRANK ADAMS JEWELERS
Watches are worn on the wrist, and as such, they regularly face the elements: sweat, salt, humidity, and more. In order to keep these marvelous pieces in pristine condition, they require special attention. Luckily, cleaning them is not as difficult as one would expect. It simply requires the right process and cleaning products. Our experts at Frank Adams Jewelers have put together this guide to cleaning your watches.
HOW TO CLEAN A WATCH AT HOME
First, note that some watches are water-resistant and others are not. If it is water-resistant, mix warm water and soap in a bowl. With a soft toothbrush, gently scrub the watch with the mixture. If the timepiece has precious metals such as gold or silver, use something extra soft like a microfiber cloth. If the watch is a diving watch or something water-proof, it is possible to give it a dip. After you clean it, dry it off with a microfiber cloth. For watches that are not watch-resistant, use a dry soft toothbrush to scrape off the debris and clean it off with a cloth. The strap, or bracelet, follows the same path.
WHAT NOT TO USE WHEN CLEANING YOUR WATCH
Unless the watch has been exposed to something sticky, you do not need to do much more. If so, it is best to go to a jeweler. If you are committed to cleaning it at home, however, there are some things that should absolutely be avoided. First, it is essential to keep water away from pieces that are not designed to survive exposure to liquids. It can rust certain metals. Second, be careful of what cleaners you use, if any. Powder cleaners, bleach, and other harsh chemicals can damage and discolor the watch. Leather in particular is quite delicate.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEAN YOUR WATCH?
The frequency of cleaning depends on how often the piece is worn. If worn daily, clean it at least once a week. It is essential to take your watches to your neighborhood jeweler once or twice a year for a professional cleaning. Dirt and grime can get into all the nooks and crannies that you may have missed or cannot get to. A jeweler can also make any necessary repairs or replacements at that time to maintain the value and quality of the piece.
